bondZ5274 mutants exhibit male sterility with cytokinesis defects.
Constriction of the contractile ring is often minimal or slowed in bondZ5274/bondZ3437 spermatocytes, with these cells ultimately failing to complete cytokinesis. The contractile rings eventually detach from the plasma membrane in the mutant spermatocytes, with the cleavage furrow regressing rapidly and the poorly constricted ring constricting or collapsing rapidly and directionally from the site of membrane detachment towards the opposite site of the cell, where the ring remains attached to the cell cortex.
A large proportion of bondZ5274 mutant spermatids have one large nebenkern with four nuclei of normal size, indicating a cytokinetic failure in both meiotic divisions. A smaller proportion have two nuclei and a large nebenkern, indicating failure of only one of the meiotic divisions. The same phenotype is seen in bondZ5274/Df(3R)hh mutants. Spermatocytes of bondZ5274 mutants lack an organized central spindle and an F-actin ring throughout ana-telophase. The equatorial anillin band is present but fails to constrict properly.

A pex2HP35039/+ background partially suppresses the male sterility and cytokinesis defects found in bondZ5274 mutants. This is enhanced when in a pex107 or pex1010 background.
