Aged (4-day-old) Culde01982 mutant adults exhibit strongly reduced light sensitivity (decreased electroretinogram, ERG, amplitude) although the photoreceptors are intact. Light sensitivity in young flies or in 4-day-old flies reared in darkness until the ERG measurements is comparable to wild-type.
In Culde01982 mutant adult retinas exposed to light the ninaE and trpl proteins accumulate in large cytosolic vesicles, such accumulations are not found in wild-type retinas.
Adult Culde01982 mutants display late-onset and light-dependent retinal degeneration and exhibit gradual loss of rhabdomeres and photoreceptor cells. By the age of 30 days, all photoreceptor cells, with the exception of R7 and R8, are severely degenerated and R1-R6 rhabdomeres are completely lost. Abnormal vesicular structures resembling multivesicular bodies accumulate in Culde01982 mutant retinas during the degeneration process. Retinas of 40-day-old Culde01982 mutants reared in the dark show normal structure.

Culde01982 has photoreceptor neuron | adult stage phenotype, non-suppressible by trpl302
Culde01982 has rhabdomere of eye photoreceptor cell | adult stage phenotype, non-suppressible by trpl302
The vesicular accumulations of ninaE and trpl proteins in the cytosol of photoreceptor cells in adult retina upon light exposure characteristic for Culde01982 mutants are fully rescued by combination with Arr11.
The progressive light-dependent retinal degeneration (loss of photoreceptor cells and rhabdomeres) characteristic for Culde01982 mutant adults is not suppressed by combination with trpl302.
The progressive light-dependent retinal degeneration (loss of photoreceptor cells and rhabdomeres) characteristic for Culde01982 mutant adults is suppressed by combination with ninaE7. All seven rhabdomeres are still present in 15-day-old Culde01982;ninaE7 flies kept under light-dark cycle, although the rhabdomeres are smaller than in wild-type.
Culde01982 is rescued by CuldninaE.DsRed(Unk)
The vesicular accumulations of ninaE and trpl proteins in the cytosol of photoreceptor cells in adult retina upon light exposure as well as the progressive light-dependent retinal degeneration characteristic for Culde01982 mutants are fully rescued by expression of CuldninaE.T:Disc\RFP
