Flies expressing Atg18aKK100064 under the control of Scer\GAL4Mef2.PU display climbing defects in males (but not females), together with progressive heart defects: thicker heart walls and a distorted lumen with a rough surface in older flies, increased systolic dimension (but not diastolic dimension) throughout adult life, and significantly reduced fractional shortening at day 40 (but not in younger flies). Mitochondria in cardiomyocytes are abnormally elongated and narrowed, the mitochondrial network appears fused/enlarged and the mitochondrial volume density is significantly increased in 40-day old flies. Alongside, indirect flight muscles display fragmented mitochondria and reduced mitochondrial volume density.

Adulthood-only expression of Atg18aKK100064 under the combined control of Scer\GAL4Myo31DF-NP0001 and Gal80[ts] does not significantly affect the posterior midgut cell size, as compared to controls. Adulthood-only expression under the combined control of Scer\GAL4tub.PU and Gal80[ts] leads to the failure to induce autophagy (assessed by the lysosome and autophagosome marker, Lysotracker) in the adult fat body in response to starvation, as compared to controls.

Flies expressing Atg18aKK100064 under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU show no defects in ommatidial structure.
