7bp deletion, resulting in a frameshift after the 18th amino acid residue.
Photoreceptor cell axon targeting in the medulla is highly disorganised in flies containing homozygous eyes (generated using the EGUF/hid method). The regular array of fascicles is disrupted and many axons cross over neighbouring bundles. Homozygous R8 axons often extend irregularly to abnormal positions, both in mosaic flies containing homozygous eyes generated using the EGUF/hid method and in flies containing small photoreceptor clones spanning less than two ommatidia. They may terminate at abnormal layers in the medulla, either terminating in the medulla at more superficial layers than the M3 layer (8%) or terminating between M3 and M6 (22%). They may also extend to and fasciculate with a neighbouring photoreceptor cell axon fascicle (23%).
