aldExc23/Df(3R)AN6 mutants undergo premature separation in all oocytes.

Cytological studies of aldC3/aldExc23 mutant oocytes reveals a high frequency of chromosomes that appear to have procociously entered anaphase I, and in which achiasmate homologs are often seen as still physically associated and thus perhaps 'trapped' on one side of the spindle. Visualisation of meiosis in aldC3/aldExc23 oocytes by live video microscopy reveals that shortly after spindle formation, the DNA fails to remain as a single mass at the metaphase plate, and soon enters an anaphase-like configuration where first the chromosomes and then the spindle appears to divide into two masses. This entry into anaphase takes less time than achiasmate homologs often require to achieve proper orientation, and is never observed during wild-type prometaphase.
