Expression of kirredsRNA.Scer\UAS in the eye under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF causes mild eye defects. Typically, bristle groups and inter-ommatidial cells are mis-positioned although ommatidia remain well separated as in wild-type.

Reduction of both sns and kirre expression through kirredsRNA.Scer\UAS and snsdsRNA.Scer\UAS expression under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF enhances slightly the patterning defects seen in kirre down-regulation. Deleted, extra cells ('cone contact cells') are frequently found in direct contact with cone cell quartets. Depletion occasionally leads to inter-ommatidial cells occurring in multiple rows between ommatidia. In each case, ommatidial spacing is nonetheless nearly indistinguishable from single knock-down of sns alone.

Reduction of both hbs and kirre expression through kirredsRNA.Scer\UAS and hbsIR.Scer\UAS expression under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF enhances slightly the patterning defects seen in kirre down-regulation. Inter-ommatidial cells show little evidence of sorting into a single file.
