Expression of nejdsRNA.Scer\UAS in wandering third instar larvae driven by Scer\GAL4hs.PB results in chromosome condensation defects. Approximately 50% of the metaphase chromosomes from brains expressing nejdsRNA.Scer\UAS fail to condense properly and appear to shred.

The number of mitotic cells in eye discs of third instar larvae expressing nejdsRNA.Scer\UAS driven by Scer\GAL4hs.PB is reduced only two- to threefold by hydroxyurea (HU), while the number of mitotic cells observed in the discs from control larvae is reduced between ten- and sixteenfold by HU treatment. Non-heat-shocked control discs all retain a robust checkpoint response to HU treatment.
