Homozygous tracheal terminal cells show normal class I branching, but subsequent branching is much reduced compared to wild type, so that the mutant cells have many fewer higher order branches than normal. In addition, the mutant cells lack gas-filled lumens, apart from in a region at the proximal end of the cell near the nucleus. In contrast to the tapered branch tips seen in wild type, the tips of mutant branches often appear bulbous (in some cases this appear to be due to a simple accumulation of cytoplasm, while in other cases, the abnormal tips appear to contain internal membraneous structures).
Hemizygous embryos have a large hole in the cuticle. par-629VV/par-615N embryos have occasional small holes in the cuticle.
par-629VV/par-629VV is a suppressor | partially | somatic clone of terminal tracheal cell phenotype of Scer\GAL4btl.PS, btlλ.UAS
The increase in branching seen in tracheal terminal cells expressing btlScer\UAS.T:λ\cI-DD under the control of Scer\GAL4btl.PS is suppressed in a par-629VV mutant background, but the double mutant cells still show increased cell growth.
