vret148-60 females lay no eggs. The germarium is filled with undifferentiated germ cells that maintain a round spectrosome and inner sheath cells fail to associate with germ cells.

Generation of vret148-60 germline clones results in a ventralized eggshell phenotype (fused/missing dorsal appendage), but does not affect earlier aspects of germ cell or somatic differentiation. Generation of vret148-60 somatic follicle cell clones has no effect on oocyte specification or localization or the morphology of the follicle cell epithelium.

Inner sheath cells and accompanying somatic cells, which normally intermingle with germ cells in wild type, die in vret148-60 mutant ovaries.
