Gr47a1 mutant flies do not show significant changes in the expected avoidance response to food laced with acetic acid (5%), as compared to controls.

Gr47a1 mutant flies do not exhibit the normal preference for sucrose over strychnine seen in control flies. Action potentials recorded from the S6 sensilla are abnormal in response to strychnine, but are normal in response to many other bitter compounds. Reduced frequencies are also recorded at two other sensilla that are robustly activated in response to strychnine, (S5, S9 and S10). The response to caffeine in the S12, I9 and I10 sensilla is normal.

Gr47a1/Df(2R)12 mutant flies do not exhibit the normal preference for sucrose over strychnine seen in control flies.

The reduction in proboscis extension response (PER) following the application of strychnine seen in wild type flies is severely impaired in Gr47a1 mutant flies. As in wild type flies, robust PERs are seen in response to sucrose.

Gr47a1 mutant adults show normal avoidance of umbelliferone in a two-way choice feeding assay.

Mutant flies show normal L-canavanine avoidance in a two-way choice test.

Expression of Gr47a+tCH322-152A22 rescues the impairment in avoiding strychnine seen in Gr47a1 mutant flies. The reduced action potential frequency recorded at the S6 sensilla in response to strychnine is also rescued.

Expression of Gr47aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr47a.7.321 does not rescue the impairment in avoiding strychnine seen in Gr47a1 mutant flies.

Expression of Gr47aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr36a.6, Scer\GAL4Gr39b.4.4 or Scer\GAL4Gr8a.0.7 rescues the impairment in strychnine avoidance seen in Gr47a1 mutant flies. No rescue is seen with Scer\GAL4Gr59c.5.5, Scer\GAL4Gr93a.5 or Scer\GAL4Gr98b.8.9. The loss of strychnine-induced action potentials in S6 is rescued when Gr47aScer\UAS.cLa is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr59c.5.5 or Scer\GAL4Gr98b.8.9, but not with Scer\GAL4Gr93a.5.

Expression of Gr47aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr36a.6 rescues the proboscis extension response defects seen in Gr47a1 mutant flies upon application of strychnine.
