Expression of high levels of Nep4Scer\UAS.A under the control of Scer\GAL4Mef2.5xCD results in a reduced crawling speed in second instar larvae compared to wild type. This reduction appears to be caused by a combination of fewer and weaker muscle contractions than normal.
The body wall muscles of third instar larvae expressing Nep4Scer\UAS.A under the control of Scer\GAL4Mef2.5xCD show degeneration and a loss of sarcomeric structure. Actin-myosin distribution is disorganised, the I-band pattern is completely disrupted and Z-bands are staggered. Nuclei with dispersed chromatin, swollen and severely fragmented mitochondria and swollen sarcoplasmic reticuli are seen.
Larvae expressing Nep4Scer\UAS.A under the control of Scer\GAL4how-24B show muscle degeneration.
