9-days old adults expressing mtdHMS01666 under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PLu show severe neuronal loss and vacuolization (HE staining), as well as a progressive increase in lysosomes (AO staining). In the retinae, only a subset of R7 photoreceptors display aberrant morphological features, while the other photoreceptors and pigment glia appear normal at days 5 and 8; numerous R7 photoreceptors display highly aberrant shapes and dark cytoplasm typical of unhealthy photoreceptors; these photoreceptors also accumulate numerous autophagosome structures with abnormal undigested contents.
Expression under the control of Scer\GAL4repo or Scer\GAL4C57 does not result in any obvious phenotypes.
