Expression of bshScer\UAS.PB under the control of Scer\GAL4vvl-GAL4induces the formation of ectopic Mi1-like neurons. These neurons are intrinsic to the medulla, have arborisations at M1 and M5 layers and a terminal at M9-10. However, the morphology of the arborisations is abnormal: M5 arborisation is wider than those of endogenous Mi1 neurons and M9-10 terminals hardly show the normal hook-like shape of endogenous Mi1 neurons.
Expression of bshScer\UAS.PB under the control of Scer\GAL4elav-C155 in clones results in an increased frequency of L4-like lamina neurons in the clones compared to in control clones.
The ectopic Mi1-like neurons induced by expression of bshScer\UAS.PB under the control of Scer\GAL4vvl-GAL4 are morphologically more similar to endogenous Mi1 neurons if the animals are also co-expressing hthScer\UAS.cPa.
Scer\GAL4bsh.PH/bshUAS.PB partially rescues bsh1
Expression of bshScer\UAS.PB under the control of Scer\GAL4bsh.PH partially rescues the transformation of Mi1 medulla intrinsic neurons into transmedullary neuron (Tm)-type neurons seen in bsh1 MARCM neuron clones. The projections of the rescued neurons are restricted to the medulla and arborisations are formed at the M1, M5 and M9-M10 layers, but the size and shape of the arborisations is not identical to wild-type Mi1 neurons.
Expression of bshScer\UAS.PB under the control of Scer\GAL4bsh.PH partially rescues the formation of ectopic L3-like lamina neurons seen in bsh1 MARCM neuron clones.
