Description

Imprecise excision of the progenitor insertion, resulting in a 5.4kb deletion that removes part of Optix including the transcription start site and the exons encoding the Six domain and homeodomain.

Detailed Description

Optix1 somatic clones in an otherwise wild-type background are excluded from the neuroepithelium and form rosettes only when induced in Optix-positive expression domains in the optic lobe of late third instar larvae. The excluded cells have an elongated shape and undergo apoptosis, without showing any signs of differentiation or neurogenesis.

Homozygotes die as early larvae.

Homozygous eyes (generated using the EGUF method) are small and kidney-shaped.

Homozygous clones in the eye disc show normal initiation of the morphogenetic furrow, but clones which span the furrow show defects in morphogenetic furrow progression compared to surrounding wild-type tissue. Photoreceptor cell differentiation is delayed, but the mutant cells inside the clone do eventually differentiate.
