Expression of Gdap1Scer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU has no effect on the external morphology of the eye. Age-dependent loss of photoreceptors is seen, which is higher than that seen in control flies at both 1 week and 5 weeks of age. 1 week old flies show a dramatic reduction of the rhabdomere terminal web region compared to controls, while in 5 week old flies, clumps of mitochondria are seen at the periphery of the photoreceptor cell and some of the mitochondria are smaller than normal. The lamina cartridge is reduced in size, has abnormal morphology and has a smaller axonal profile than normal in both 1 week and 5 week old flies. The average area of the capitate projections is larger than normal in 1 week old flies.

Old flies expressing Gdap1Scer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4Mhc.PU often have a held-up wing phenotype.

The longitudinal indirect flight muscles are still present in 1 week-old flies expressing Gdap1Scer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4Mhc.PU, but the mitochondria are smaller and more rounded than wild type. 5 week old flies show degeneration of the longitudinal indirect flight muscles, with severe degeneration of the myofibrils and loss of individual muscles. Some mitochondria are fragmented and others are large with disorganised cristae.

Co-expression of Gdap1Scer\UAS.cLa partially rescues the rough eye phenotype caused by expression of MarfScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU (ommatidia can be observed and the number of interommatidial bristles is increased).
