Expression of sfldsRNA.Scer\UAS.THFC in somatic cells during gonadal development by Scer\GAL4esg-NP5130 results in oblong-shaped testes. Approximately 97% of the Scer\GAL4esg-NP5130>sfldsRNA.Scer\UAS.THFC males are sterile. Approximately half of the mutant testes lose the normal tubular shape and show morphological defects. Germ cells at each spermatogenic stage are detected in the squashed testes with morphological defects of most of the mutant males. The morphological defects include clusters of elongated spermatid nuclei. The clusters of elongated nuclei are also seen in morphologically normal testes of the mutants.
