The brains of Usp52 mutant larvae contain more small rounded and pyknotic cells compared with wild type controls and exhibit a much higher level of apoptosis. Usp52/+ heterozygotes exhibit dose-dependent sensitivity to cycloheximide relative to wild type.

Expression of Diap1V85M.UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4da.PU partially suppresses the lethality and apoptosis seen in Usp52 mutants, shifting the third instar larval lethality to the pupal stage.
