8 nucleotide deletion starting 25 nucleotides into the fest coding sequence. This is predicted to result in a premature stop codon after only 8 amino acids.

fest1/Df(2R)BSC26 males show a germ cell arrest phenotype; the testes are half-filled with small, sausage-shaped cells and no sperm or elongating spermatids are seen. The mutant spermatocytes appear to arrest prior to meiosis I metaphase; bivalent chromosomes are seen paired, tightly condensed and congressed near the centre of the cell but prometaphase asters and metaphase spindles are never formed. The mutant spermatocytes instead contain a diffuse microtubule array which eventually becomes dense and disorganised, filling the cells and compressing the arrested nuclear material.
