Optogenetic activation (using Cnoc\ChR1Cs.IVS.20xUAS.Venus with 635 nm (red) light) of Scer\GAL4C220 neurons results in a significant reduction in proboscis extension reflex (PER) in response to 100 mM sucrose presentation, compared to controls; this aversion is sustained for several minutes after activation has finished.
Inhibition (using shi1.UAS at 30[o]C) of Scer\GAL4C220 neurons does not affect PER in response to 100 mM sucrose, or a sweet and bitter mixture, compared to controls; it does significantly suppress the reduction in PER response to 100 mM sucrose seen during and after quinine application to the proboscis, compared to controls.
