Description

13bp deletion in the first exon of NimB5. This generates a premature stop codon, leading to a truncated protein of 54 amino acid residues (instead of the wild-type 351 residues).

Comment:

A 13bp deletion starting in codon 53 leads to a frameshift and early translation termination after the addition of two novel amino acids.

NimB5SK1 homozygous larvae raised on a normal or a poor diet exhibit an increase in the number hemocytes. NimB5SK1 homozygous larvae exhibit a higher frequency of mitotic hemocytes and smaller lipid droplets with reduced intensity in fat body.

NimB5SK1 homozygous third instar larval hemocytes exhibit adhesion defects. On the inner side of the cuticle larvae, hemocytes spread less and lack filopodia. Also hemocytes are only loosely attached to the inner wall of the larvae.

In NimB5SK1 homozygous larvae the absolute number of crystal cells per larva is higher while the number of melanized crystal cells attached underneath the integument are lower compared to controls. Also the ratio of crystal cells over plasmatocytes is lower.

NimB5SK1 homozygotes raised on poor diet exhibit partial lethality at pharate adult stage.

The endoparasitoid wasp L. boulardi is less successful to infect NimB5SK1 homozygotes.
