Second instar larvae expressing RfabgVDRC.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4Rfabg.PB have a smaller central nervous system than age matched controls, due to a reduction in the volume occupied by neuronal cell bodies and the optic anlage. The neuropil is enlarged in the mutant larvae compared to controls. Proliferation of neuroblasts is dramatically reduced in the mutant brains compared to controls, but neurite extension from existing primary neurons appears unaffected.
