V-ATPases (vacuolar (H⁺)-ATPases) are ATP-dependent proton pumps. Principally, they pump protons from the cytoplasm to the lumen of organelles or across epithelial apical membranes to drive secondary active transport. (Adapted from PMID:20450191).
