The condensin complexes are involved in the condensation of chromosomes and segregation in mitosis and meiosis. Condensin complexes consist of five subunits: a Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) 2/4 heterodimer and three regulatory, non-SMC subunits. In vertebrates, two condensin complexes, I and II, have been identified. In D.mel, the condensin I complex has been well characterised.
