The Heterotrimeric G-protein alpha subunits (Gα) can bind guanine nucleotide. When inactive, Gα is bound to GDP and associates with Gβγ forming an heterotrimer. Upon GTP binding, Gα dissociates from the heterotrimer Gαβγ. Gα has an intrinsic guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) activity. (Adapted from
