The High mobility group box (HMGB) transcription factors are sequence-specific DNA binding proteins that regulate transcription. The HMGB proteins have a characteristic L-shaped HMGB domain of about 80 amino acid residues, which binds the DNA minor groove and induce DNA bending. The HMGB domains are found in one or more copies and are involved in the regulation of DNA-dependent processes such as transcription, replication and chromatin remodeling. (Adapted from
