Description
Description
Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are glycoconjugates that consist of a core protein linked to one or more linear heparan sulfate (HS) chains. The chains are composed of alternating N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and glucuronic acid or iduronic acid that can be variably N- and O-sulfated. The degradation of HSPGs occurs in the lysosome. The HS chain is initially fragmented into oligosaccharides by an endo-glucuronidase. These oligosaccharides are then degraded sequentially from the nonreducing end by exo-type glycosidases and sulfatases to release the monosaccharide units. (Adapted from PMID:28741461.)
Notes

In D. melanogaster, the enzyme(s) involved in either the cleavage of heparan sulfate into oligosaccharides or the removal of the 3-O sulfate group from N-sulfoglucosamine are not known. CG15117 is a paralog of βGlu and is predominantly expressed in the male accessory gland. Although it has glucuronidase activity, it is not clear if it is involved in heparan sulfate proteoglycan catabolism, therefore CG15117 is not included in the gene list. Sulf1 is a paralog of CG18278 that extracellularly removes 6-O-sulfate groups from heparan sulfate. As it is not involved in heparan sulfate proteoglycan catabolism, Sulf1 is not included in the gene list.
