The Drosophila insulin-like peptide genes (Ilp1 through Ilp8) are expressed in small clusters of insulin-producing cells (IPCs) in the brain. The IPCs appear to be functionally analogous to the human pancreatic islet beta cells. This report describes a Drosophila model of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus based on blocking release of the insulin-like peptides, using targeted expression of Kir2.1 (FBto0000566) in the IPCs.
