The authors have agreed on a revised nomenclature for genes encoding subunits of Adaptor Protein (AP) complexes in D. melanogaster. (See associated pdf document for details.)
The previous nomenclature of these genes used 5 different naming systems, and several symbols were ambiguous and/or did not reflect either popular or expert usage. The new system is unambiguous, informative and largely reflects usage in the literature. Most genes are clearly named based on their molecular function/orthology - the exceptions are the 4 genes named for classical genetic reasons (garnet, ruby, carmine and orange), all of which encode AP-3 subunits, and which remain unchanged (though symbols & names consistent with the new nomenclature are added as synonyms.)
