The following nomenclature changes to genes encoding components of the m6A pathway in D. melanogaster are proposed, with the aim of connecting the emerging fly research in this area to the large mammalian audience. Ime4 (CG5933), Inducer of meiosis 4 - Originally named 'Ime4' in Hongay and Orr-Weaver, 2011 (FBrf0215277), based on orthology to S. cerevisiae IME4 - However, there is no evidence that CG5933 acts as an “Inducer of meiosis” in flies (see FBrf0215277), as it’s name wrongly implies - Clear orthology to vertebrate METTL13 (methyltransferase like 3) - The only other D. melanogaster gene encoding an 'mRNA (2-O-methyladenosine-N(6)-)-methyltransferase' (CG7818) is named 'Mettl14' => Rename to "Mettl3, Methyltransferase like 3" YT521-B (CG12076) - Originally named from a single mention in Table 1 of Fernandez-Funez et al., 2000 (FBrf0131287), based on human gene symbol at the time - human "YT521-B" is now called "YTHDC1" - Clear orthology to vertebrate YTHDC1 (YTH domain containing 1) => Rename to "Ythdc1, YTH domain containing 1" CG6422 - not previously named but characterized in Kan et al, 2017 (FBrf0236006) - clear orthology to vertebrate YTHDF1/YTHDF2/YTHDF3 (YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA binding protein 1/2/3) => Rename as "Ythdf, YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA binding protein" fl(2)d (CG6315), female lethal d - Originally named in Granadino et al, 1990 (FBrf0051639) - Clear orthology to vertebrate WTAP (WT1 associated protein) - However, the current symbol is entrenched in the fly literature, and the vertebrate symbol may not make sense in flies => No change Mettl14 (CG7818), Methyltransferase like 14 => No change vir (CG3496), virilizer => No change nito (CG2910), spenito => No change
