We wish to improve (make more informative and consistent) the nomenclature used in FlyBase for the 4 genes encoding subunits of the Drosophila succinyl-coenzyme A synthetase.
The current FlyBase nomenclature for these genes is:
Scsα, Succinyl-coenzyme A synthetase α subunit (FBgn0004888)
CG6255 (FBgn0038708) (this is a second gene encoding the alpha subunit)
skap, skpA associated protein (FBgn0037643) (this is the ADP-forming beta subunit)
Sucb, Succinyl coenzyme A synthetase GDP-forming beta subunit (FBgn0029118)
We propose the following systematic nomenclature be adopted, standardizing with the ‘Scs’ prefix (which is also an generally accepted abbreviation for the enzyme):
Scsα  => Scsα1, Succinyl-coenzyme A synthetase α subunit 1
CG6255  => Scsα2, Succinyl-coenzyme A synthetase α subunit 2
skap => ScsβA, Succinyl-coenzyme A synthetase β subunit, ADP-forming
Sucb => ScsβG, Succinyl-coenzyme A synthetase β subunit, GDP-forming
