lacZ expression is governed by a fragment of en promoter extending from -2.4kb to +1088bp upstream of the transcription start site. Intron 1 of Dvir\en is present downstream of the lacZ sequence.

Reference

en is expressed in stripes roughly two to three cells wide. Anterior en cells underlie smooth cuticle, whereas the posterior en cells underlie first row denticles.

In embryos, lower levels of expression observed in first 3 (anterior) stripes; in subsequent stripes, expression in even-numbered stripes is higher than that in odd-numbered stripes. By germ-band retraction stage, expression in stripes has disappeared, but fat body and neural expression persists.
