EcollacZE(spl)m8-HLH.2.61 drives expression in the outer optic anlage, with stronger expression near the medial transition zone where the medulla neuroblasts form.

E(spl)m8-HLH transcript is expressed in the inner and outer optic anlagen (IPC, OPC), most strongly in the medial epithelial cells of the OPC. Expression is also observed in medulla forming neuroblasts, and in newly generated medulla neurons and their axons.

In third instar imaginal discs, expression initially strong in regions undergoing PNS development; in the leg, these correspond to the chordotonal organs in the femur and tibia. Expression is observed near the presumptive joints of the leg; resolves in pupa into one-cell wide stripes proximal to the leg constrictions.

In third instar wing disc, pattern of expression described as 'resembling' that of E(spl).

In early embryo, expression differs slightly from that of E(spl) : expression in the mesectoderm anlagen is in a pair-rule pattern rather than continuous, and expression extends into the mesoderm anlagen rather than being restricted to the mesectoderm anlagen. In stage 9 embryos, expressed in a ladder-like pattern of cells in the ventral neurectoderm.
