The 1.2 kb ci promoter mediates embryonic expression along the ventral midline, and, unlike the wild type ci pattern of expression, generates stripes which overlap with those expressing en protein. This expression is suppressed when the 1.2 kb promoter is combined with the 2.2 kb upstream region (EcollacZci.2.2dis+1.2prx). The 1.2 kb promoter does not mediate expression in imaginal disks.
