The 2.2 kb upstream fragment was sufficient, when coupled either with a Hsp70 promoter or a 1.2 kb ci promoter, to drive EcollacZ expression in embryos and imaginal discs in a wild-type ci expression pattern. EcollacZ expression is seen in a segmentally repeated pattern from embryonic gastrulation through germ band extension, and in the anterior compartment of imaginal discs.
