A genomic EcoRI fragment from within the regulatory regions of the spalt complex, downstream of salr, is placed upstream of a weak P-element promoter followed by sequence encoding nuclear-localized lacZ.

Embryonic expression is detected in the midgut. In the larva, expression is detected in specific domains of the wing and haltere imaginal discs. Expression in the eye disc and CNS in the larva is ectopic, while the wing disc expression is both ectopic and endogenous. Expression in the prothoracic gland matches endogenous salm expression.
