Expression is specifically expressed in a subset of labellar gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) that innervate S-type sensilla. Only a small percentage of GRNs specified by alka-Gal4 overlap with Gr66a-expressing (bitter) GRNs, Gr64f-expressing (sweet) GRNs, or Ir76b-expressing GRNs (salt). No obvious overlap with other types of GRNs, such as ppk28-expressing GRNs (water detection) or ppk23-expressing GRNs involved in sensing high concentrations of calcium as well as pheromones was observed. Expression was observed in tarsal chemosensory neurons. Expression was not observed in brain except in axonal projections of chemosensory neurons from the labellum, the antenna and the maxillary palp.
