Embryos derived from females mutant for nos can be
completely rescued by injection of a nos RNA construct before pole cell
formation. The reduced levels of hb protein in the posterior pole of
rescued embryos, and at the RNA injection site, suggests that the rescue
is mediated by interaction with hb. The same construct can rescue the
abdominal phenotype, but not the pole cell defect, of embryos derived from
females mutant for the posterior group genes osk, vas, stau, vls,
tud, capu, and spir. The posterior group mutant pum does not have
a germ cell defect, but the injection of the nos RNA construct only
partly rescues the abdominal phenotype, and only near the injection site,
suggesting that pum affects the distribution of nos protein. Injection
of the nos RNA construct into the anterior end of wild type embryos
directs the formation of a second abdomen at the anterior end, and
suppresses the head and thoracic structures. That nos can suppress bcd
protein is suggested by the reduction of bcd protein in embryos injected
anteriorly with the nos construct.
