Homozygotes have severely reduced viability; homozygous males show 35-60% viability compared to heterozygous siblings, and homozygous females are 3 to 9 times less viable than homozygous males. Surviving homozygous escapers are infertile and have bristle defects, including abnormal sex combs in the males, which appear broken and have fewer, aberrant sex comb teeth.
