Deletion of 3957bp in the upstream region and exon I of lz.
Mutation of cistron B.
Reported as a deletion of 3,957bp (GB:AF217651 coordinates 4,042–7,998).
lzs adults have a "spectacle" eye phenotype. Ectopic cell death is seen in third larval instar eye discs.
15% of photoreceptor cell clusters are abnormal, cells R1 and R6 are not recruited properly. Uniform sheet of unorganised cone cells is found. The periphery of the retina contains cells in loosely organised clusters including cone as well as primary and secondary pigment cells, the darker pigment produces the 'spectacle' phenotype. The fenestrated membrane at the base of the retina is shredded.
Homozygotes have a total lack of ommatidial structure in the eye. Pigment is dispersed as a ring around the edge of the eye ("spectacle" phenotype). The entire retina and the underlying lamina are defective. Few, if any, lenses form. The arrangement of the pigment cells is completely deranged, resulting in the complete loss of the fenestrated membrane. Numerous photoreceptor cells are found displacing the lamina. The optic ganglia of the medulla, lobula and lobula plate are also perturbed.
The antennal funiculus is reduced in size in hemizygous males. All large and small basiconic sensilla on the antennal funiculus are missing, and the number of trichoid sensilla on the antennal funiculus is reduced. The number of coeloconic sensilla on the antennal funiculus is normal. The density of the coeloconic sensilla on the antennal funiculus is increased and the density of the trichoid sensilla on the antennal funiculus is decreased compared to wild-type.
Eyes are greatly reduced in size and have a smooth surface in homozygous flies. Red eye pigment is sparse and confined primarily to the margin of the eye. Tarsal claws are vestigial. The spermathecae and pars ovariae are absent in homozygous females.
Eye size reduced, narrower than normal; no true facets; whole eye has glossy surface; color yellow-brown with darker rim, creamy in combination with v. Tarsal claws vestigial. Homozygous females lack spermathecae and parovaria and are sterile. lzs/+ females tend to have abnormal parovaria (Anderson, 1945). RK1. spectacle; tarsal structures reduced or absent; spermathecae absent; parovaria absent female-sterile
Patterson, 1928.
lzs/lzg provided probably the first recorded case of intra-allelic recombination (Oliver, 1940a; Oliver, 1940b).
lzs maps to the spectacle sublocus of lz.
