Homozygous females have a shorter mean life span compared to heterozygous controls. The lifespan of mated homozygous females is significantly shorter than that of unmated homozygous females.
Tumorous phenotype.
Tumorous ovaries.
Many more germ cells in ovarian tumors are positive for expression of male germline markers than in wild type testes, suggesting a relaxation of growth control, or accumulation of apical cells due to a developmental block.
Spermatogenesis normal but mating behaviour fails because wild type females refuse to react to the courtship attempts of mutant males. Effect is not absolute, and depends on allele (there is a strong correlation between male sterility and severity of impairment in the female phenotype) and varies between affecting 6.7% (otu14) and 86.6% (otu12) of mutant males.
Tumorous ovaries. Oogenesis is normal in homozygotes when in combination with bgcnQS2 heterozygotes.
Oncogenic allele; 91% of homozygous ovarioles contain tumorous chambers consisting of a mass of small, undifferentiated, mitotically active cells. 85% of hemizygous ovarioles are quiescent.
otu1 behaves like a DIF allele at 18oC, an ONC allele at 23oC and a QUI allele at 28oC. The ovarian tumors which give the mutant gene its name are made up of large numbers of single cystocytes and small numbers of clones of 2-4 interconnected cells.
oncogenic; cystocytes continue dividing and produce tumors
otu1 has decreased cell number | oogenesis phenotype, non-suppressible by Scer\GAL4nanos.PU/bbnUASp.cMa

otu[+]/otu1 is a suppressor of egg chamber phenotype of encUU3
otu1 does not have an obvious effect on the abundance of germ cells in XY traF.Hsp83 pseudo-ovaries.
otu1 is rescued by otuS40A.UASp.EGFP/Scer\GAL4nanos.PU
otu1 is rescued by otuUASp.EGFP/Scer\GAL4nanos.PU
One or two copies of P{hs-otu.N} causes substantial morphological suppression but only partial suppression of sterility.
Rescued by otu+t5.4 : fertility and normal ovarian development is restored.
Gans.
Oncogenic (ONC) class allele. The ovarian phenotype of flies transheterozygous for otu1 and a number of other otu mutations has been analysed.
One of ONC class of alleles.
Expression of Sxl is severely reduced in germ cells of homozygous females. Substantial levels of male-type splicing can be detected in the mutant ovaries.
Severe otu allele.
Shows a dominant interaction with ovoD2 and ovoD3 : more extreme mutant phenotype as assayed by reduction in number of egg chambers at stage 10 or further developed. There is no apparent correlation with strength of otu allele and its interaction with the ovo alleles. Reverse transcription and PCR, and in situ hybridization with the male specific exon, showed that the Sxl transcripts are spliced in the male-specific mode in transformed germ cells. This effect is alleviated by the SxlM1 mutation.
Penetrance of interaction with otu1 is 73%.
The banding patterns of the polytene chromosomes of ovarian pseudonurse cells of otu1 females have been compared with larval salivary gland polytene chromosomes.
ONC class of otu allele. P{otu-98} restores a low but detectable level of fertility, P{otu-104} completely restores fertility.
