The number and density of spiked protrusions on the dendrites of class III ldaB neurons is reduced in mutant third instar larvae compared to wild type, while the total branch length of the dendritic tree is normal. The neuron terminal branchlets are bent in the mutant larvae, in contrast to wild type. The fraction of spiked protrusions that exceed 10 μm in length is increased in the mutant larvae. The complexity of the dendritic tree appears slightly increased (for example, the number of all termini excluding the terminal branchlets of less than 30 μm is significantly increased). The number of spiked protrusions on the class III neuron dendrites is also reduced in mutant second instar larvae, and a reduced rate of formation of new branchlets is seen at this stage compared to wild type.
Homozygous border cell clones show normal migration.
Bristles are gnarled due to disrupted actin filament bundles. Nurse cell cytoplasmic actin filaments are absent.
Extreme bristle phenotype, female sterile.
Macrochaetae gnarled in a fairly extreme manner. Microchaetae wild type. sn36a is only allele to cause pronounced reduction in replication of oocyte nurse cell DNA (King and Burnett, 1957). Also causes more extreme retardation of vitellogenesis than other female-sterile sn alleles (Bender, 1960). sn36a sn4 homozygote has nearly normal bristles and is sterile. Expression of ctScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4221 in a sn36a background in class I vpda neurons results in an expansion of the dendrite tree. In addition, the formation of ectopic spiked protrusions is reduced by more than 40% compared to the expression of ctScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4221 in a wild-type background.
