Somatic gonadal precursors (SGPs) are specified normally, but primordial germ cells are absent in embryos derived from osk^CE4/osk⁸ females. The SGPs compact into spherical 'gonads' even in the absence of the germ cells.

In embryos laid by osk⁸/osk^CE4 mothers, compaction of somatic gonadal precursors in parasegment 10 (part of embryonic gonadal mesoderm) occurs normally, even though these embryos lack germ cells.

The gonadal mesoderm coalesces normally in embryos derived from osk⁸/osk^CE4 females, even though the embryos lack germ cells.

Embryos that are derived from osk^CE4/osk⁸ females and are zygotically homozygous for ena^C14-06 show defects or delays in somatic gonadal precursor cluster adhesion at stage 13 and fail to complete gonad compaction, resulting in extended or split gonads at later stages, as occurs in ena^C14-06 single mutant embryos.
