The w marker in the P{lacW}ciDplac insertion does not normally variegate, producing flies with a uniform red eye phenotype in a w[-] background. However, in combination with P\TSal variegation due to P-element dependent silencing (PDS) is seen, resulting in flies with a variegated to strongly silenced, near-white eye colour.

P\TSal also causes P-element dependent silencing of the w marker in the P{hsp26-pt-T}ci2-M1021.R insertion.

Expression of the w marker in the P{hsp26-pt-T}39C-12 insertion line normally shows variegation, but this is suppressed by P\TSal, resulting in flies with a red eye phenotype in a w[-] background.

P{P-Sal} fails to repress gonadal dysgenesis, either through a maternal effect or through a combination of zygotic and maternal effects, with or without heat shock.

Repression of P-element mobility in somatic tissues, only weak repression of dysgenic sterility.

Completely suppresses the vg21-3 mutant phenotype. Repressor of gonadal dysgenic sterility and snw mutability.

The presence of P\TSal partially suppresses the nicking of the wing that is seen in vg21/Df(2R)vg-B animals.

The severe wing defects seen in vg21-3 homozygotes are completely suppressed by the presence of P\TSal.

The severe wing defects seen in vg21-3/Df(2R)vg-B animals are almost completely suppressed by the presence of P\TSal.

Reverses the high chromosome instability caused by P\TΔ2-3 in mei-41D3 and mei-41RT1 mutant flies.

Does not produce any active transposase. Originally described by Karess and Rubin, Cell 38:135-146 .

P{P-Sal} can repress P-element mobility in the soma and pupal lethality associated with Δ2-3 mobilization of nonautonomous P-elements in the soma. Mobilization of the putative repressor making element causes transposase induced loss of the suppressive effect on vg21-3 phenotype confirming that P-element are responsible for the suppressive effect.
