Imprecise excision of P-element, deletion from within the element extending 1.4 to 1.6kb in the 3' direction eliminating flanking 5' genomic sequences, including the initiator ATG.
Ventral sogU2 follicle cell clones are often associated with a small operculum. Dorsal sogU2 follicle cell clones are usually smaller than those located ventrally and generate no phenotype. However, fused dorsal appendages have been observed in the proximity of dorsal clones if they touch the base of the appendages.
Embryos produced from egg chambers with ventral sogU2 follicle cell clones have bifurcated or interrupted ventral denticle belts. These embryos are more dorsalized than those only lacking zygotic sogU2 function. Embryos generated from egg chambers with dorsal sogU2 follicle cell clones do not show these defects.
Eggs laid by sogU2/+ females have eggshells with short dorsal appendages and ectopic material deposited at the base in 2% of cases and 9% of eggs show fused or partially fused dorsal appendages.
Embryos resulting from germ-line clones homozygous for sogU2 show no defects in eggshell or cuticle. Embryos resulting from follicle cell clones homozygous for sogU2 show a reduction in denticles in parts or all along the AP axis of the embryo. In the most extreme cases denticle are absent. Shift between dorsal and lateral, and lateral and ventral fates occurs. 30% of eggs derived from follicle cell clones show dorsal appendages spaced abnormally far apart.
