Flies expressing E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa under the control of Scer\GAL432B show loss of wing veins. Loss of notum microchaetae and wing margin bristles is seen. Flies expressing E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa under the control of Scer\GAL4ap-md544 show complete loss of notum microchaetae and macrochaetae, except at the very anterior edge of the notum. Flies expressing E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa under the control of Scer\GAL4455.2 show severe loss of scutellar bristles. Flies expressing E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa under the control of Scer\GAL4h-1J3 show loss of notum macrochaetae.

When expressed under the influence of Scer\GAL4da.G32, E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa can cause central and peripheral neural hypoplasia, accompanied by increased cell death. There are no obvious epidermal effects on these embryos. SI and SII neuroblast segregation is normal. The severity of this phenotype depends on the site of insertion of the P{UAS-E(spl).N} element. When expressed under the influence of Scer\GAL4sca-537.4, E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa can cause defects in the patterns of bristles. Pupal lethal lines from Scer\GAL4da.G32 or Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 lack almost all macro and microchaetae. Notal chaetae are particularly affected in E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa.

E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa expressed under the control of Scer\GAL432B enhances the wing notching seen in Df(1)N-54l9 heterozygotes. Expression of E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa under the control of Scer\GAL432B enhances the scalloped wing phenotype seen in hemizygous Nl1N-ts1 flies shifted to the non-permissive temperature at the early third larval instar stage (72-84 hours after egg laying). Expression of E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa under the control of Scer\GAL432B has no effect on the nicked wing phenotype seen in hemizygous Nl1N-ts1 flies shifted to the non-permissive temperature at the mid third larval instar stage (96-108 hours after egg laying).

The phenotype caused by E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa expressed under the influence of Scer\GAL4da.G32 is dramatically enhanced if the flies also carry P{HLHm5-UAST}. Expression under the influence of Scer\GAL4da.G32 attenuates the mutant phenotype of Df(3R)grob32.2. Males hemizygous for a deficiency for the ac-sc complex in which Scer\GAL4da.G32 drives the expression of E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa are almost completely aneural. When E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa and l(1)scScer\UAS.cCa are simultaneously driven by Scer\GAL4da.G32, neural hypoplasia effects are much weaker than those caused by E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa alone, especially in the PNS. When E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa and l(1)scScer\UAS.cCa are simultaneously driven by Scer\GAL4sca-537.4, ectopic sense organs caused by l(1)scScer\UAS.cCa are much reduced. Simultaneous expression of E(spl)Scer\UAS.cNa or HLHm5Scer\UAS.cNa with E(spl)1,bd-.Scer\UAS driven by Scer\GAL4da.G32 causes severe neural hypoplasia in embryos and adults, and reduces the level of neural hyperplasia in Df(3R)grob32.2.
