Approximately 36% of how^r17/how^r4 mutant testes completely lack germline stem cells. Another 16% of testes show significant gaps in the ring of vas-positive cells, indicating a reduction in the number of germline stem cells. The remaining mutant germ cells are not found in organized cysts and different-sized germ cells are observed near the hub.

90% of homozygotes die during metamorphosis, with the head stuck in the thorax. Escapers have a strong held-out wing phenotype and have blisters on the wings.
