UASt regulatory sequences drive expression of a cDNA fragment which encodes E(spl)m8-HLH that is truncated at the position at which the deletion occurs in E(spl)m8-HLH1 (this results in a protein that lacks the C-terminal 56 amino acid residues). The encoded protein acts as a dominant negative (as assayed by effects on bristle development).
