Moderate Minute phenotype in heterozygotes: larval development is prolonged by about 16 hours, scutellar bristles are shortened by about 20% and there is no significant change in vitality (fraction of hatched eggs appearing as adults) or female fertility. Homozygotes exhibit an extreme Minute phenotype: 60% shortening of scutellar bristles, larval development time prolonged by 70-80 hours, complete sterility and small body size. Many flies also have morphological lesions indicating defective imaginal disc development: rough and malformed eyes, reduced and malformed aristae and thin-textured wings. Male terminalia, abdominal segment 9, exhibits uncompleted rotation of the genitalia and anal plate in 65% of eclosed males. Male gonads are undeveloped, testes are smaller than wild type and have small bulges spread along their length. Ovaries contain scattered germaria with stalled stage 2 egg chambers with no enveloping follicle cells and many small nuclei in what appears to be a disorganised mass of cells. The mutant ovariole is enlarged three times compared to wild type. RpS3prv9 is lethal in combination with RpS3Plac92 and in combination with RpS3prv11 exhibits a strong Minute phenotype.
