Insertion in the 5' non-coding first exon of vas.
Homozygous females lay variably ventralised eggs, the phenotype ranging from complete loss of dorsal appendage material through to wild-type dorsal appendages. Occasionally, immature eggs in the ovary with a micropyle at both the anterior and posterior pole are seen. These eggs are not laid. Homozygous stage 10 egg chambers often have a constriction close to the posterior pole of the oocyte. Homozygous ovaries are significantly smaller than wild-type and have various structural defects. The oocyte is mispositioned in 5% of egg chambers. vas15/vas3 or vas15/Df(2L)A267 females produce eggs with more severe anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral polarity phenotypes than homozygous vas15 females. 100% of eggs laid by vas1/vas15 females appear wild-type.
