Expression of Tom^{Δ3'-UTR.Scer\UAS} under the control of Scer\GAL4^pnr-MD237 leads to an excess of bristles in the dorsocentral region of the notum and on the head. Expression of Tom^{Δ3'-UTR.Scer\UAS} under the control of Scer\GAL4^GMR.PF results in a rough eye phenotype. The ommatidia lack a regular organisation and frequently show defects in the corneal lenses, which appear to contain extra sockets. Many ommatidia have less than the normal number of photoreceptor cells. Ommatidia with the normal complement of photoreceptor cells show defects in chirality.
